Sarah Palin had 37 million viewers last night, only one million less than Obama when he gave his Investco Field speech.

I'm just glad she doesn't wear pantsuits. Ugh.

A couple of hours before Sarah Palin rocked the house in St. Paul last night, I caught a few minutes of Bill O'Reilly's interview with Sally Quinn, who is front and center among the female media elites chastising Sarah Palin for her supposed inability to manage the demands of the Vice Presidency with the role of nurturer in chief among her own brood.

We women are not known for our capacity to mind our own business.

As soon as I saw Sarah Palin take to the podium, though, Quinn and her minions' disdain for the tough-as-nails-smooth-as-satin Alaskan governor became crystal clear.

They cannot stand her because she easily makes 4 or 5 of them. Palin is able to accomplish, with one arm seemingly tied behind her back, more real work with less complaint than nearly all the working liberal women in America. From liberal women, one hears nothing but complaint and woe-is-me tales of how unbearably hard their lives as women have been.

Palin's Pregnancy Problem

My first reaction was shock. Then anger. John McCain chose a running mate simply because she is a woman and one who appealed to the Republican's conservative evangelical base. Now, with news that Palin's 17-year-old unmarried daughter is pregnant, McCain's pick may not even find support among "family values" voters.

It has happened before, of course. Geraldine Ferraro was chosen as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1984 because she was a woman, but that was 24 years ago. I thought we were past this. Apparently not. McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate is a cynical and calculated move. It is a choice made to try to win an election. It is a political gimmick. And it's very high risk. I find it insulting to women, to the Republican party, and to the country.

This is nothing against Palin. From what little we know about her, she seems to be a bright, attractive, impressive person. She certainly has been successful in her 44 years. But is she ready to be president?

"This ordinary boy [Obama] just might be the first president in the history of the United States to have a black woman sleeping at 1600 Pennsylvania legally," Wright said, referring to Michelle Obama, in a sermon at the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston.

When I, myself, became pregnant in college, my soon-to-be mother in law (a hard-core liberal Democrat who had openly encouraged me to have un-married sex with her son) expressed her “disappointment” in both of us – and immediately pushed for an abortion. My own mother (a sex-before-marriage-is-sin Catholic) immediately comforted me, affirmed her love for me and said, “There’s always room in our family for another baby.” My husband and I have been JOYFULLY married 21 years and have 4 amazing kids…. What an beautiful gift of love my mother gave me that day!

Babies...Punishment vs. Love. I think I’ll take love.

Who's lying? Foreign affairs expert Joe Biden, or the Israeli Army?

The respected Israeli newspaper Ha'artez today repeated an Israeli Army Radio report that Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, told "senior Israeli officials behind closed doors that the Jewish state will have to reconcile itself to a nuclear Iran."

"Israel will have to reconcile itself with the nuclearization of Iran," Army Radio said that Biden told the unnamed officials. "It's doubtful if the economic sanctions will be effective, and I am against opening an additional military and diplomatic front."

Biden spox David Wade said the unsourced report is simply false.

"This is a lie peddled by partisan opponents of Senators Obama and Biden," said Wade, "and we will not tolerate anyone questioning Senator Biden’s 35-year record of standing up for the security of Israel. Joe Biden’s first trip as a Senator was to Israel, he has worked with every Israeli leader from Golda Meir to Prime Minister Olmert, and he takes a back seat to no one when it comes to protecting the relationship between Israel and the US."

She's better qualified than Obama to be president

In his column today in the Washington Post, E.J. Dionne Jr. refers to Governor Sarah Palin as "breathtakingly reckless" and refers to her as "Harriet Miers, except without all the experience."

The problem for Dionne, of course, is the Governor Palin is, based on her resume and achievement, better qualified than Obama to be president. Dionne tries to dismiss this by repeating the common Democratic charge: Obama is prepared to be president by virtue of the fact that he's run for president. In his words, "Conservatives have complained that we barely know Obama. This is nonsense. Obama has been put through the journalistic wringer since he entered the public spotlight four years ago. We have been given fewer than 70 days to get to know Palin."

Actually, conservatives have not argued that we barely know Obama. In fact, some argue that, like many Americans (apropos the recent Pew poll), we have seen too much of Obama.

Dem apologizes for joking about hurricane

(CNN) — Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Don Fowler apologized Sunday for recently joking Hurricane Gustav's expected landfall on the same day as the opening of the Republican National Convention suggested God was on the Democrats' side.

. . . Speaking to the Associated Press Sunday, Fowler said his comments were intended to make light of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell's remark that the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 was God's punishment for abortion and homosexuality.
